About the GIC
The GIC is designed to provide prospective instructors with the essential skills to understand the nature of adult learning, meet the needs of individual learners and facilitate learning across different types of teaching modalities, to allow learners to develop skills, knowledge and meet clear assessment criteria.
The GIC is a joint ALSG/RCUK blended learning approach which aims to teach the principles of adult learning. The course includes key note sessions, demonstrations and practice sessions in all modalities of teaching and assessment required for life support training; lecture skills, skills teaching with continuous assessment, teaching simulations, workshops and simulation assessment.
Curriculum and key information
Preparation for the course comprises of:
- Reading the 4th edition Pocket Guide to Teaching
- Completing the pre-course e-module
- Preparing your teaching assignments, ready to present on the face to face course days.
2-day face-to-face course:
- Covers all modalities
- Small groups of 4 or 5 candidates
- Educator lead review sessions
- Demonstrations
- Continuous assessment with faculty support
Post-course e-modules:
- To prepare you to become an Instructor Candidate on your chosen provider course.
- The course runs throughout the UK and overseas. Course costs varies between centres.
Candidate eligibility
Only those candidates recommended for instructor training from their provider course can attend the Generic Instructor Course. Once you have been recommended for instructor training, you will receive confirmation from ALSG or RCUK. You will then have access to log into the GIC site and book your GIC.
Becoming a GIC instructor
Once you have taught on a minimum of four provider courses (eight for NLS) within any of the participating provider course groups as a full instructor, you are then eligible to teach on a GIC as an instructor course instructor candidate (GICIC). You will be required to teach on two GIC's in order to gain full GIC instructor status. [link to form]
